Landscape Design in Saratoga, Drawn Around the Oaks and the Slope

A landscape designer in Saratoga has to start with the trees. The city protects any native tree with a trunk 6 inches across or more, and removing, damaging or building near one takes a permit. So we map the oaks and read the slope before we draw a single path.

J&P Landscape is a licensed California landscape contractor (#963784) based in San Jose, drawing and building Silicon Valley yards since 1984. One team handles the plan and the build. Houzz has named us Best of Houzz 12 times, and clients rate us 4.9 stars across 93 Houzz reviews.

The Saratoga Rules Every Plan Starts With

Native Oaks and Protected Trees

Saratoga protects native trees, including coast live, valley and blue oak, at 6 inches across, and other trees at 10 inches, measured 4.5 feet above the ground (Municipal Code Article 15-50). Paving, footings or digging in the root zone, which reaches 5 feet past the dripline, generally need a design that protects the roots.

Hillside Walls and Fences

A retaining wall can stand up to 7 feet, but only 3 feet in a front or exterior-side setback. A fence in the front setback is also held to 3 feet, and a solid fence stops at 6 feet plus up to 2 feet of open lattice (Article 15-29). Hillside zoning adds tighter fence rules.

Water Rules and the Valley Water Rebate

Saratoga’s water-efficient landscape rules (Article 15-47) cover new landscaping of 500 square feet or more and re-landscaping over 2,500, and a licensed landscape contractor can prepare the plan. Valley Water’s lawn rebate pays $2 per square foot, up to $3,000 for a single-family home, if you are approved before work begins.

What We Design and Build for Saratoga Homes

The team that draws your Saratoga plan is the team that builds it, so the hard parts of a hillside yard stay true to the drawing. That includes retaining walls cut into a slope, paver terraces, a pergola, an outdoor kitchen, and drainage that moves water off the slope and away from tree roots.

Planting follows the same drawing, with water-wise planting chosen for the city’s water rules. Still weighing ideas? Our landscape design and consulting page shows how the design stage works before anything is priced.

Front Yards and Entries

The front yard carries the setback limits, so we draw the entry, a paver walkway and the beds inside them, with fences and walls held to the 3-foot front limit. Plants are matched to the sun each bed gets, so the yard looks settled from the street and stays easy to keep.

Backyards, Patios and Outdoor Rooms

A backyard works when it fits how your household uses it. We place seating, shade from a pergola and cooking space around those habits, then plan drainage under the hardscape so the patio stays dry after rain and water runs away from the house.

Slopes, Walls and Drainage

Sloped ground needs a plan for the water as much as the view. We draw terraces, steps and retaining walls to stay within the city’s height limits and put drainage behind them first, so the hillside is held and the yard stays usable in winter.

How a Saratoga Yard Goes From Site Walk to Planting Day

Oaks, slope and drainage only show up on site, so the first visit happens at your property.

01

Walk the lot.

We measure, locate every oak and other large tree, read the slope and drainage, and ask how you want to use the yard.

02

Check what applies.

We confirm which tree, wall, fence and water rules touch your address, and whether a permit is needed, before anything is drawn.

03

Draw the plan.

You get a drawing made for your lot, with a quote to go with it, and we revise it until it fits how you live.

04

Build it.

One crew builds from the ground up, putting in drainage and irrigation before paving and planting, and we walk the finished yard with you.

Every Saratoga yard is priced after the site visit, because slope, access, materials and permits all change the number.

See Every Tree, Wall and Bed on One Drawing

The drawing shows where each tree, wall, path, patio and planting bed goes on your lot, with the city rules that touch each one noted beside it. You review the whole yard on paper, ask for changes and approve it before any digging starts. The people who drew it also build it, so the finished yard matches what you signed off.
